– THE INFORMATION –

Reflexology is not a new therapy.  It has been practiced by many cultures throughout the world for centuries under various names.  The basis of the therapy is that there are reflex points on the feet, hands, and ears; and that these correspond to all the different parts of the body.  Applying varying pressure to these points through the use of finger and thumb massage techniques can stimulate the body’s natural homeostatic mechanisms to balance its systems and promote a feeling of relaxation and wellbeing.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A TREATMENT

Initially, when you attend for a reflexology session you will complete a confidential medical and lifestyle questionnaire.  I will discuss the information with you, finding out what you want to get out of the reflexology sessions, and to ensure that if you do have any medical conditions that you are not contraindicated for reflexology.

The second part of the session involves a 60 minute reflexology treatment on either the feet, hands or ears.

If you are having foot reflexology you will be asked to remove your shoes and socks. If you are having hand reflexology I will ask you to remove any watches or bracelets before starting the treatment.  For ear reflexology, I will use a gentle cleansing wipe to wipe over the ear area.  Please note there is no need to clean your ears!

At the end of the session you will be given some after care advice and options for further sessions can be discussed.

Please allow up to 90 minutes for this initial session.

FOLLOW-UP SESSIONS

Following on from your first session, I will put together a treatment plan specifically personalised for you, and each session will last 60 minutes.

WILL REFLEXOLOGY BENEFIT ME?

Reflexology is a holistic complementary therapy that focuses on an individual’s health and wellbeing. As individuals, we all react to things differently and reflexology is no exception.  In general, most people find reflexology can –

  • Be deeply relaxing
  • Improve mood
  • Help with sleep
  • Help release tension
  • Promote a positive sense of wellbeing

Reflexology cannot cure illnesses or medical conditions, nor can it be used as a diagnostic tool which is why any client concerned about an element of their health should seek advice from a health care professional such as their GP.

FURTHER READING ON REFLEXOLOGY

There is growing evidence that reflexology has a positive impact on some medical conditions. However, as this research is limited I cannot say for definite that reflexology can help you with a specific condition. Below are links to some of the latest research in reflexology:

The effect of reflexology on the autonomic nervous system in healthy adults: a feasibility study

The effects of reflexology on chronic low back pain intensity in nurses employed in hospitals affiliated with Isfahan University of Medical Sciences.

The impact of hand reflexology on pain, anxiety and satisfaction during minimally invasive surgery under local anaesthetic: A randomised controlled trial.

EAR REFLEXOLOGY

Ear reflexology (also known as auricular reflexology) is a reflexology treatment given through the ears. The ears are worked using a gentle finger and thumb massage technique; slowly but simultaneously as there are over 100 pressure points on each ear!

HAND REFLEXOLOGY

Hand reflexology is a reflexology treatment given through the hands and lower arms.  Pressure points on the hands and lower arms are stimulated using a gentle hand massage which focuses on the specific pressure points found on the hands. This type of reflexology I have found to be particularly relaxing.

FOOT REFLEXOLOGY

Foot reflexology is a reflexology treatment which is given through the feet and the lower legs.  Pressure points on the feet and lower legs are stimulated using the application of gentle pressure using a range of finger and thumb techniques.

SYNERGISTIC REFLEXOLOGY

This synergistic treatment involves working on two or more areas such as the feet and hands, or ears and hands, during a session.  This combination treatment can enhance the effects of working just one area, such as the feet, and leaves a person feeling very relaxed.
